Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Selection While McCarthy Omitted

Returning manager the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Irish team for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, as the two players poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as Farrell opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC league matches so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
